Musings of a CreepKnight

The days here in Virginia grow short and cold, killing anything in me that vaguely resembles holiday spirit. I don't like snow anymore. In days long past, it was an event looked forward to, where we, a motley group of young men, would gather in a single, 4 wheel drive vehicle and hold up in Vensik's basement to play video games until the wee hours of the morning while late nineties alternative rock blended with static on a radio somewhere off in the corner of the room. We would blow each other up with tanks or shoot each other in the head with Scaramanga's golden gun, all while laughing and experimenting with new and often incorrect ways to use obscenities. When it was all done we would sleep, only to wake up the next morning to eagerly await the weatherman's announcement that there would be no school that day and do it all over again. Once, we carried this trend on for four days straight until we were so sick of looking at each other that Grymm and I didn't speak for nearly a week. It was truly a glorious and frivolous time; a time which, if I may, the adventures that would give birth to Voodoo Walrus were begun in naivety and earnest. But enough of that gooey shit. Now the snow is nothing but a hindrance to my daily activities, keeping me locked inside when I should be out there amongst the masses, spreading the gospel of the Walrus like a plague upon the masses. And alas, in my time of weather imposed exile I find myself doing the one thing that makes me happy when I am not with those I love; writing music. It's what I do when I'm not writing comics. In my life I have dabbled in many forms of composition but still find that the two manners with which I primarily express myself- script writing and lyrical prose- are the two that bring me the most joy. To that effort, I have begun work on a Voodoo Walrus soundtrack. Composed of original songs spanning a variety of genres, it will be as grand and glorious as anything I have ever done... provided it gets finished before the A.D.D. sets in and I move on to another project. But to that end, I request the aid and assistance of you, our faithful readers and preachers of the Glorious Gospel of the Walrus. In order to create a great soundtrack, one must first get a genuine sense of its audience's sensibilities. After all, I could be content to the Voodoo Walrus soundtrack as a country album (I'm not, but I could be). Therefore, I challenge you the reader to come up with a list of songs by other artists that not only bring to mind the comic itself, but specific things within the comic as well. For example, during "A Clockwork Dragqueen," I often found myself listening to Abney Park, Wolfsheim, She Wants Revenge, Bauhaus, and Placebo while writing, because that's the music they would play in Cafe Tesla. Whenever I hear "Fuck You" by Cee-Lo Green I think of Bowler, because she would love that song for the dance beat.  Things like that. The Top Twelve tracks will be voted upon by Grymm and I and used to create an unofficial Voodoo Walrus soundtrack which we will announce at the end of the year, which I will then use as inspiration in creating an official Voodoo Walrus soundtrack which I will release track by track as it is recorded. And hopefully this will get me out of the funk in which I currently reside. This... should be interesting.

  1. Hey everyone, I’m not adding to the blog post because I wanted to kick today off with my personal responses to Vill’s inquiry above.

    Songs I Associate with Characters:
    -Grymm- Finger Eleven’s Ordinary Life
-CreepKnight- Better Than Ezra’s Return of the Post Moderns
    -Bowler- Pink’s Raise Your Glass.
-Mirth -Snow Patrol’s Take Back the City
    -Shmeerm- Soul Asylum’s Monster Man
-Cyradwee – Emilie Autumn’s I Know Where You Sleep

-Mac- Snow Patrol’s What If the Storm Ends. Primarily for early in the Meatnecks and Boomsticks arc. I imagine it playing as she stalks the halls and corridors offing employees and ninjas left and right with that malicious grin on her face. The lights overhead sparking and shorting drowning the scene in shadow on occasions. But no sound is heard but the track playing.

    Other Stuff:

The Prodigy’s Invaders Must Die for general all around ninja slaughtering

Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance for the Captain Thud arc obviously

Amanda FUCKING Palmer’s Guitar Hero for the Brand New Morning arc.

Infant Sorrow’s Furry Walls for the Greasy Spoon arc.

Ooh! Doctor’s Steel’s Back and forth for anytime that Doc and her Meatmen are on the scene. I can see those meaty bastards breakdancing and grooving to that all too well and some parts are perfect for Doc being entirely too touchy feely/horrifying with CreepKnight.

CreepKnight’s own original track “Witchita” for the end of the Captain Thud arc
I’d also include his other track “I Live” just because its my favorite song of his he’s ever created. But as it doesn’t really link up to anything Walrus-y.

Shit. That was fun. I can’t wait to see what everyone throws in the mix.

  2. And here are a few of my picks.

-Grymm- Butthole Surfers: The Weird Revolution
    -CreepKnight- The Verve Pipe: Hero
-Bowler- Thea Gilmore: Call Me Your Darling
-Mirth- Fiona Apple: Tymps (Sick in the Head)
    -Marron- The Cranberries: Dreams
-Rook- Creature Feature… all of Creature Feature
    -Mac- Metric: Gold Guns Girls
    -Shmeerm- Monster Magnet: Space Lord
-Cyradwee- Night on Bald Mountain (cliche… yes it is)

    -HoboGeddon- GWAR: Saddam-A-Go-Go
-Brand New Morning- Butthole Surfers: Dracula from Houston
-Eggrolls- Kenny Rogers: Just Dropped In
-Revenge of Captain Thud- Ghoultown… lots of fucking Ghoultown
-Greasy Spoon- … yeah, it’s Infant Sorrow’s Furry Walls… and The Coasters: Down in Mexico
-Meatnecks and Boomsticks- Matthew Good Band: Everything is Automatic;AC/DC: Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap); Abney Park: The Wake

Suitable Mentions include: Better than Ezra: Turn Up the Bright Lights and The Butthole Surfers: Shame of Life as both of these songs are almost always in a Voodoo Walrus playlist.

  3. I shall have to spend a wee while thinking about that. I’ll post my list later on tonight but for now I’d like to praise you for your great choice of novels in the background of the comic. I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Gerald Brom. However, I am now mildly worried about whether or not three of my favourite authors all appearing in one strip is purely down to coincidence or if there is a much darker reason…

    1. Yeah, it took me a couple of hours to cobble together my list, so no surprise there.

I miss my copy of Hitchhiker’s Guide. I really need to snag it back from the real life Bowler at some point.

      1. I need to snag mine back from my lifes real life version of Shmeerm…yes, My shmeerm can read… either that or he just fucks the books…he DOES enjoy papercuts, and that WOULD explain all the mysterious stains…

        1. Oh Shmeerm can readno problem. He loves him some lolcats and tearing apart and trolling people verbally on forums.

  4. My theme song is Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls. That is all.

Oh, and loving the Trek references.

  5. Nice lists. What I don’t know or have, I will look up.

And CreepKnight, Mussorgsky is never cliche. Drunken rambling nightmares, yes, but never always effective. I also spy Lukyanenko’s Nightwatch in that stack of books. Hitting the grim Russians hard, then.

Vensik is Crew! I wondered, slipping around since the primordium, if he wasn’t connected to it all.

As to CK’s Grand Effort, I support this greatly! Expand! Overcome! Masticate!

    1. Vensik is Voodoo Walrus crew. Hmm. An interesting thought. Let’s just say Vensik is a long time friend and contributor to Voodoo Walrus Productions.

  6. “Vensik is Crew! I wondered, slipping around since the primordium, if he wasn’t connected to it all.”

Hmm… sometimes it’s best to know what your getting connected too…

    :P

  7. Mac always reminded me of Celldweller’s “Last of the Firstborn”
And Shmeerm – Bethlehem’s “Schatten Aus Der Alexander Welt”
But then again, many extreme things remind me of Walrus.

The question is: now that we have music, rather classy stuff too, for the cast and crew, what of the legion of commenters? *grins so wide and evil to make the devil cringe*

I have my list written up, but I want to see what the rest of you think.

    1. Oh no. This isn’t any kind of actual list. That’s what’s to be decided after plenty of people have had time to chime in. We’re going to look at everythign everyone suggests and pick what we think works best of all the choices for things!

  8. -Grymm- Scissor Sister’s I can’t decide
-Creepknight- I have a Russian Song in my Musical archives I would associate wit hyou, sadly I do not know the name in English.

    -Marron-
    -Rook-

    -Greasy Spoon-
    -Meatnecks and Boomsticks-

    1. This is what I have currently…I must think some more on the others….

      1. AHAH! MArron- Sexy, Naughty Bitchy me~ Cause she just…yea. Not every lady can pull off that outfit than calmly threaten to toss a guy in an iron maiden~!

Rook: Labyrinth- Magic Dance cause he’s really sorta…special. Like that song is. *coughs*

    2. I take that “The Undertaker” is the name of the song, but what artist?

      1. If I recall right, Puscifer.

  9. Grymm: Gogol Bordello – Start Wearing Purple or Cake – The Distance
    CreepKnight: Rammstein – Ich Will
    Bowler: Rehab – Bump
Mac: Celldweller – Last of The Firstborn
Shmeerm: Bethlehem – Schatten aus der Alexander Welt (perhaps the loudest bit of metal ever)
    Cyradwee: Prokofiev – Scythian Suite
Marron: Cake – Short Skirt, Long Jacket

    HoboGeddon: Apocalyptica – One
Egg Rolls: Iron Butterfly – In A Gadda Da Vita
Revenge of Captain Thud: ZZ Top – Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers
Greasy Spoon: Creeping Weeds – Derelict
Meatnecks: Five Finger Death Punch’s cover of Bad Company

Also Rosey, your list is awesome, so here’s one for you.
Rosey: Spyro Gyra – Silk and Satin

    Ante up, folks.

    1. Mirth – this one took something special. Hania Lee – Alice is Dead

    2. D’aw~ how classy~!

Just for you March the classic crooner himself~ Frankie Sinatra and my personal favorite: Fly me to the Moon~

      1. *wolf whistle* Lady, your kind of class is hard to come by…

  10. I like how Vill kinda set an unspoken precedent with the format of his list.

    1. Of course he did~ it makes it easier to keep track of the awesome picks when you peruse through~

      Why fix what isn’t broken?

  11. oh CK I know your hatred for snow for i also hate it. everythime i plan something with friends this december a snowstorm comes allong and makes sure no one can come. this friday nobody could watch my bands first show cause of the snow.

    Revenge of Captain Thud: sabaton-hellrider
    Greasy Spoon: avenged sevenfold-bat country
    Meatnecks: drowning pool-bodies

as for the commenters: i don’t anyone of you people long/good enough to choose a song so i will base it on your avatars and comment i’ve read from when i started to know:

    Muleface: black sabbath-iron man
Rosey: aerosmith-cryin'(in my opinion a classy song)
    Vensik: metallica-welcome home(sanitarium)(cause of CK’s rambling)
Marchosias: megadeth-paranoid(somehow your avatar seemed to fit when i listened to this)
illyria: amon amarth-gardians of asgard(i love vikings, i’m a dutch viking)

    1. I wouldn’t let a man break my heart, I’d break him in two and /then/ cry. Very nice choice for Meatneck by the way~

    2. Amon Amarth…. Good band, very good band.

    3. Yes! Korpiklaani!
Megadeth was an excellent choice. For you, Dutchman: Finntroll – Hel Vete

If a person’s taste in music says the least about them, I’m in the presence of saints and madmen.
We are making the best playlist I’ve ever seen.

      1. i’m in the madmen catagory. my own song would be sweating bullets, just l;isten to those lyrics

  12. shit, forgot brand new morning:
-Brand New Morning: metallica-sad but true(nobody believed you while it was sad but true)

  13. shit forgot to mention this:

  14. Currently listening to everyone’s submissions that have been made so far while working on the comic week’s comics. So I’m going to be kind of light on responding today and probably tomorrow as I have a lot of work to do. Doesn’t mean the comments aren’t being read though! I know I’m fascinated by everyone’s selections so far and I hope we get a few more readers responding with their thoughts!

      1. miss rosey, i used to use the user name of zombie as an inside joke with some people….i have been here for a little bit anyway….

        1. Mercenary Clown

by the way, switch grymm and ck…i mixed that one up…lol

    2. ’bout time you posted your list. Glad to see the new name, will please the Grymm.

  18. Muleface:
A song for you is a difficulty. You’re not explicitly evil, you don’t plot much, and your only mention of world domination was a patriotic decree regarding deep-frying invaders of Scotland in their own intestines. You have been here for as long as I, and have been a bastion of sanity amongst fiends and worshipers of malign deities. I do however, like the Scots. They’re funny, their poets are excellent, and they invented Scotch.
So for you: Bad Company – Sky Is Burning

    Curator:
For all the darkly hilarious brain-droppings, the conniving, the Lovecraftian nightmares, and the shoggoth you sent after me, I think this works fine:
Darkest of the Hillside Thickets – Color Me Green
(I tamed it, by the way – I call it Rosco)

    1. Do you know how many virgins I had to sacrifice to bring that beast forth? there is an entire town in Arkansas completely deprived of every child under the age of 10 now… AND YOU TAMED IT!? son of a…. Tell “rosco” that since it failed, I will be sending it my dry cleaning and carpet cleaning bill.

Interesting choice of song, I have to say I had never heard it till now, I enjoy its sound… I will cancel the next assassin in honor of your great choice…plus…well…he refused to work on christmas…:/

      1. dude, you send a shoggoth? you know even an idiot 4 year old could tame those. you should have send a plutonium dragon

        1. you could have always sent me…course…Marchosias is someone i kinda like…so that would have REALLY cost a lot….because even for people i don’t like I’m not cheap….so maybe not…but just saying….the Mercenary Clown is always for hire.

        2. @ illyria: Only a rank amateur would send a plutonium dragon, they are just as likely to eat you after you have payed them as they are of completing the mission, and even if they dont…I dont have the resources to waste after marchosias found one of my diamond hordes stole them, and filled the cavern with giant spiders…bastard…

Mercanary clown, I like him to, he’s awesome! thats why he must die… woh OH oh oh oh oh oh oh…caught in a rad bromance… (the song I made for you march:P)

      2. So much effort to scrub out little old me?… I’m flattered.
(Rosco? Get me some coffee while I plot my revenge, would you?)

Oh come on Curator, the look on your minion’s face when he opened the cavern door – priceless.

Mercenary Clown – A rate hike just for me? Why thank you.
AC/DC – Dirty Deeds (done, apparently, not so cheap)

        1. I must say, I have underestimated you, you even found out my only fear, I…I concede… In fact, I will even hand over my elite secret Ninja/Cthulu Hybrid assassins as a show of my respect, and subservience to you :)

        2. Mercenary Clown

@Marchosias- yes, i am really not that cheap…but i am the best….if you can afford me…which most can’t…but one job is enough to keep me fed and housed (as well as pay for my operation and my own random wants) for a year at least

    2. I gotta say guys…this is one of the more amusing things I’ve seen in the comment blocks. *chilling with my horde of Ninja rats*

      1. I love this place. Really do.

*stirs black coffee from Rosco, wonders what housework Ninja/Cthulhu assassins can do for me. French maid outfit? Yes.*

        1. It really is an awesome place. And a great place to chill out with the other evil overlords/assassins/insanely cool people of the world. *stretches out and steeple my finger with a wicked smirk* I’d recommend The stilletto heels with that maid outfit. A good ninja can wear them with class.

      2. Yes. Maid outfit complimented with stilettos. With fancy little feather dusters chained to their wrists. Ankles chained in a manner to hobble a free range of motion and to discourage running away until such a time that the reprogramming fully sets in. Mass renaming of them all as numers or simply “Fifi” would also work well.

Great thing about ninjas, usually they’re already pretty lithe so they shouldn’t look too odd in such outfits. And it works well for the rest too. Humiliation through looking ridiculous.

        1. Kind of hard to humiliate them, they have no emotions, and operate almost entirely on instinct, but as long as one holds the magical talisman I have provided to marchosias they will follow his orders without question, and with ruthless efficiency… Not to mention they are nearly impossible to destroy permanently… will make them great for cleaning out ones trash compactor, even while its in operation!

  19. There are some truly horrible comics out there. As part of my “drive traffic and build value for project wonderful ads campaign” that I designed and took on without Grymm’s knowledge a few weeks ago, I try to click on 2-3 ads a day and push a few hundred people here through various other means. (Torture, extortion, ect). However that last ad click and resulting comic left a taste in the corner of my skull no amount of amputee midget porn has been able to remove.

    1. Oh jesus, Do you remember what comic it was you had the misfortune of viewing?

      1. There were a few birds involved… but no. I’ve scrubbed it from my mind with that second cranberry martini a few minutes ago.

      2. I’m also busy playing with the new itampon.

        1. Have I told you that you’re very special recently. Because you are. So special.

  20. “Have I told you that you’re very special recently. Because you are. So special.”

Aww… no. No you haven’t. Thanks sweetie.

    1. You’re welcome sugar britches. Anytime.

  21. Been lurking through the archives and enjoying the walrusy goodness. Here is what is either called to mind or I’m actually listening to at any moment spent gazin upon your site in abject wonder.

CreepKnight – Mad Caddies – Weird Beard
Grymm – Ween – Mutilated Lips
Cyradwee – Lordi – Devil is a Loser
Shmeerm – Winds of Plague – The Impaler or Canibal Corpse – Addicted to Vaginal Skin
Mac – Joy Division – She Lost Control
Bowler – Bella Morte – Earth Angel
Mirth – Mortiis – Smell the Witch
    Marron – Nightwish – Amaranth
Rook – Jack off Jill – My Cat
Doc – Kamelot – The Human Stain
    Mungo – Hammerfall – Titan
Hobogeddon – Insane Clown Posse – Chicken Huntin
    Eggrolls – Pantheon – Ride
Revenge of Captain Thudd – Kettle Cadaver – The Crack of Dawn
Greasy Spoon – Tiamat – A Deeper Kind of Slumber and Bathory – Everdark Woods
Meatnecks – Strongbad – The System is Down and Sawer Family – Say Goodbye

    1. Oops that last one should be Sawyer Family – Say Goodbye

    2. Ooh a new commenter! Greetings Kyriell! You got suggestions in just before Vill and decided to start sitting down and picking through everyone’s choices! Fascinating entires.
